Via Roma 261 had 47.000 volgers.
It was running on a default Shopify template: functional and technically fine, but visually anonymous. Products were listed correctly, collections existed, and checkout worked, yet none of it reflected the actual brand behind the store. If you landed on the website from Instagram, the experience felt disconnected. The boutique had personality; the website didn’t. That was the gap I was brought in to fix.
The existing Shopify setup wasn’t broken from a technical standpoint. Inventory management worked well, collections were already organised, and the team knew the backend inside out. The problem wasn’t the infrastructure; it was the positioning. The website looked like a temporary solution for a brand that clearly wasn’t temporary.

Waarom dit boetiek webdesignproject op Shopify bleef
At that point, most developers might suggest a full migration: move everything to WooCommerce, rebuild the store from scratch, import products again, and retrain the team on a new workflow. I didn’t think that made sense. Shopify was already doing its job perfectly, handling inventory management, product organisation, checkout, collection management, and the day-to-day backend operations the boutique relied on.
The solution was a hybrid setup: WordPress for the frontend and Shopify as the commerce engine underneath. Using Shopify’s Buy Button SDK, products and collections were integrated directly into a completely custom WordPress website, allowing the frontend to be designed around the boutique rather than around the limitations of a standard Shopify template.
From the boutique team’s perspective, almost nothing changed. They still manage products, inventory, and collections through Shopify exactly as before. From the customer’s perspective, however, the experience is entirely different. Instead of landing on a generic e-commerce template, users now arrive on a website designed specifically around the boutique’s identity, aesthetic, and clientele.
There was no migration, no operational disruption, and no unnecessary complexity. The infrastructure that already worked stayed in place, while the presentation layer was completely rebuilt. Good web design for boutiques isn’t about adding more animations or chasing trends. It’s about creating an online experience that reflects the quality of the physical store while keeping the backend simple for the business owner.
Typography was rebuilt around Raleway: geometric, understated, and precise without feeling cold. The goal wasn’t to make the website louder; it was to make it feel considered. Once the identity was clear, the rest of the design decisions became much simpler because every element could be evaluated against the same visual direction.
One of the most important additions was the live Instagram integration. With nearly 47K followers already actively engaging with the brand, Instagram was one of the boutique’s strongest assets, so the website needed to feel connected to that ecosystem rather than isolated from it. A dedicated location page and simplified contact structure also help bridge the gap between online discovery and physical foot traffic, something especially important for an independent boutique.
The hybrid WordPress + Shopify setup eliminated the need for a time-consuming migration and allowed the project to focus entirely on presentation, UX, and identity. In total, all 18 collections were integrated without changing the client’s existing workflow. The backend stayed familiar, while the frontend became something entirely different.
Waarom deze hybride Shopify + WordPress opstelling werkt
For many small boutiques and independent fashion stores, Shopify is already more than enough operationally. The issue usually isn’t functionality; it’s differentiation. Default templates can make different brands feel identical, especially in fashion, where perception matters as much as the product itself.
A custom WordPress frontend combined with Shopify allows businesses to keep their existing inventory system, avoid operational disruption, maintain Shopify checkout and product management, gain much greater design flexibility, and create a more distinctive customer experience. It’s not the right approach for every project, but for established stores with solid infrastructure and weak presentation, it can be a clean way to improve the digital experience without rebuilding everything underneath it.
Eindresultaat

This can be especially useful for boutiques, fashion brands, and independent stores where presentation plays a major role in customer perception. The goal isn’t always to replace what already works. Sometimes, it’s about building a better experience around it.
